It was a long and good life for Winona Mae (Cary) Wilmoth when she went to rest in her Savior’s arms on the evening of Oct 16, 2019. As resident of Eagle Estate in Independence, KS for the last 5 years she continued to profess Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
To honor her life the family will have visitation on Monday, October 21, 2019 from 1:00 P.M. until service time at Wickham Family Funeral Home in Cherryvale. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Mound Valley Cemetery. The family has requested that a memorial be given to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and they may be left or mailed to the funeral home.
Winona (Cary) Wilmoth was born to Charles and Elsie (Smith) Cary on March 13, 1914 in Mound Valley, Kansas. She was one of seven children (Albert, Ralph, Frank, Winona, Raymond, Alden and Violet) all now deceased. Family later moved to rural Edna, KS.
She attended Hawkin School of rural Edna. Later she went to Edna grade school and then graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1933. August 5, 1936, she married Laurence John Wilmoth at a minister’s house in Edna. They lived and farmed outside of town. They were the proud parents of Howard Laurence Wilmoth, their only son in 1939. Winona worked alongside Laurence on the farm and maintained the household duties as well. She raised chickens and had an egg route to contribute to the family income. The family farm north of Edna and east of Angola is where they spent some of her adult life.
Her son, Howard married in 1961. Shortly following the marriage in 1962, there was a fatal accident that took his life, but left a daughter-in-law, Iva with a 6-week-old grandson, William (Bill) Howard Wilmoth. Later Winona gained two foster granddaughters, Stella (Dannels) O’Brien and Betty (Dannels, Sanders) Jacobs.
Winona enjoyed the farm life, church socials, crocheting, canning, and sewing. She shared her wisdom with those close to her and enjoyed helping the grandchildren with 4-H projects. Laurence and Winona retired and moved to Mound Valley in 1974. It was in 1986 that Laurence passed away. Following his death, she moved to Coffeyville, KS. February 1992 Winona married Harold Beard. They later divorced. She would spend her days making numerous quilts for friends and family. At the age of 99 she moved to assisted living -Eagle Estates - in Independence.
She was a faithful member to the Baptist churches and attended regularly. 1935 she dedicated her life to the Lord and joined the Edna Baptist Church, but later transferred her membership to the First Southern Baptist Church when she moved to Coffeyville in 1989. Her legacy leaves a grandson Bill Wilmoth and his wife Melissa of Coffeyville, foster granddaughters Stella O’Brien and husband Ron, & Betty Jacobs and husband Stan, 8 great grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. She is proceeded in death by her son (Howard), parents, six siblings, and numerous other family members and friends.
