Vesta Kingsbury Scott, 84, a resident of Fredonia, passed away peacefully at her beloved home surrounded by family on February 18, 2017. Towards the end of her illness with Alzheimer"s, her husband, John, was able to fulfill his promise to keep her in her home and faithfully stayed by her side until she was called home.Vesta was born on February 5, 1933 in Fredonia to Oliver and Yola (Cather) Kingsbury. Vesta was a 1951 graduate of Fredonia High School where she was a proud member of the National Honors Society, twirlers, and a student council officer.On September 2, 1956, Vesta married John H. Scott. Vesta worked for many years in the banking industry before following her sense of creativity becoming a consultant of Home Interiors and Gifts. Throughout her life, Vesta was never one to sit and be idle. She served as a boy scout leader and girl scout leader for many years. Her children have fond memories of camping trips they shared with her. She enjoyed serving her church in many capacities as the choir director, coordinating Christmas and Easter pageants and VBS. This continued upon John and Vesta"s return to Fredonia in 1993 following John"s retirement. Vesta enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, decorating her home, antiquing, and getting reacquainted with longtime friends and family. Together, she and John delivered Meals on Wheels for 15 years.Vesta is survived by her husband of 60 years, John, her sisters, Karen Hull of Benedict and Rita Renfrow of Lawrence, children, Stacy (Paula) Scott of Opelousas, LA., Sandra (Guy) Lowe of Sugar Land, TX, Kevin Scott of Fredonia, and Kathryn (Bill) Cassidy of Corpus Christi, TX. grandchildren, Caitlyn (Geoff) Elkins of New Orleans, LA., Scott Lowe of Dallas, TX., Chad Lowe of Sugar Land, TX., Ryan Cassidy and Jarod (Emily) Cassidy of Corpus Christi, TX., two great grandsons, Finley Elkins of New Orleans, LA., and Oliver Cassidy of Corpus Christi, TX., along with numerous nieces and nephews.Vesta is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Irvin, and sisters, Evelyn and Vera.The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the nursing staff, including RN Terrie, LPN Ashley and Chaplain K. Springer of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice for their invaluable support and kindness in the care of Vesta in her last days. They would also like express gratitude to Dr. Terry Morris and Dr. DeAnna Vaughn in their care of Vesta over the years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Fredonia First Christian Church collected by Wickham Family Funeral Home at 510 North 7th Street, Fredonia, KS.Graveside Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Weakley Cemetery, West of Fredonia.
