Shirley Ann McConnell

Shirley Ann McConnell, 85, of Cherryvale, Kansas passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Labette Health in Independence, Kansas. 

Shirley was born on May 17, 1938, in Coffeyville, Kansas the daughter of Percival J. Hollingsworth and Jessie (Denney) Hollingsworth. She attended Cherryvale schools. Shirley had a warm and welcoming personality. 

On June 15, 1956, in rural Labette County, Kansas she was united in marriage to Dean Douglas McConnell, and he survives at the home.

Shirley worked as a hairdresser and homemaker.  She attended New Hope Christian Church, was a member of Good Sam camping club and a quilting club.

Shirley found joy in multiple hobbies and interests throughout her life. From solving puzzles to playing cards and dominoes. One of her passions was quilting, where she combined creativity with patience to create beautiful works of art that will be treasured for generations to come. When not involved in her hobbies or caring for her family, Shirley enjoyed shopping excursions with loved ones or settling down to watch a good movie. She valued the time spent visiting with family and friends and cherished every camping trip.

In addition to being a loving wife to Dean McConnell of the home.  She was blessed with four children: Randy McConnell of Edna, Kansas; Mike McConnell of McPherson, Kansas; Doug McConnell of Norman, Oklahoma; and Tanya Burk of Joplin, Missouri, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister Doris Powell, along with her three brothers Carl, Max, and Jack.

To honor the life of Shirley Ann McConnell, a visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Wickham Family Funeral Home - Cherryvale located at 216 East 4th, Cherryvale, Kansas. It will be a time for friends and family to come together to share stories and offer support during this difficult time.

A Celebration of Life service will follow on Thursday, February 15, 2024. The service will begin at 1:30 PM at Wickham Family Funeral Home - Cherryvale.

Shirley Ann McConnell's vibrant spirit will continue to live on through the cherished memories held by her husband Dean, their children Randy, Mike, Doug, and Tanya, as well as her ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. 

The family kindly requests that donations be made in Shirley's memory to St, Jude Children's Research Hospital a charity close to her heart.
