Robert J. Gillett, 71, a 15 year resident of Southeast Kansas, presently of Toronto, Kansas, and formerly of Salida, Colorado, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Allen County Hospital in Iola, Kansas. He was born December 24, 1936 in Owosso, Michigan, the son of Emmett and Vesta (Kersey) Gillett. Mr. Gillett served in the United States Marines during Vietnam, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He retired after 40 years of working as a millwright and pipefitter, most recently for Trend Construction. On May 7, 1984 in Fredonia, Kansas, he married Maxine Hydorn. She survives at their home. Robert was a member of the American Legion Post #325 in Toronto, a lifetime member of the V.F.W., and a member of the Odd Fellows Fraternity. During his lifetime he lived and worked in every state in the union and five foreign countries. His survivors include: His wife: Maxine Gillett of Toronto, KS Two daughters born into a previous marriage that ended in divorce. Three step-children: Kathy Cummings of Toronto, KS Bob Cummings of Chanute, KS Jim Cummings of Wichita, KS Four siblings: Marie Herrick of Grand Rapids, MI Emmett Gillett Jr. of Owosso, MI Dick Gillett of Owosso, MI Wayne Gillett of Owosso, MI 8 step grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren He was preceded in death by infant sister. Cremation has taken place and memorial graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, May 9, 2008 at Kincaid Cemetery in Kincaid, Kansas with Rev. Jim Uhlig officiating. Following the service, there will be a gathering of family and friends at 1:00 P.M. at the Toronto Senior Center. A memorial has been established in Mr. Gillett"s name with Hospice of Kansas and may be sent to the funeral home. Family condolences may be left on this website.
