Dick Ostrander
Richard Dean Ostrander, affectionately known as Dick, died Nov. 30, 2020, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
He was born Dec. 19, 1936, to Guy L. and Georgia Christine (Keesling) Ostrander in Fredonia. He was the “Boy of the Week” at Fredonia High School the week ending March 18, 1955. During high school, he lettered three years in both track and football. Dick graduated from Fredonia High School, where he had earned the nickname “T.D.” because of all the touchdowns he scored for the Yellowjackets football team, in 1955.
After graduation, Dick attended Independence Junior College on a football scholarship. He joined the Army Reserves and graduated from Fort Sill, Okla., in 1956. He also went to Fort Carson, Colo., as part of Battery C, 195th Field Artillery Battalion, Kansas National Guard. Dick worked at LaDow and Spohn in Fredonia for almost 50 years before retiring.
Dick enjoyed bowling and won many trophies during his years in various leagues including Fredonia, Neodesha, and Chanute. On Oct. 24, 1959, he bowled a perfect game while the whole bowling alley stopped to watch his final strike. On Oct. 17, 1977, Dick appeared in the Wilson County Citizen after bowling a 636 series as a member of the Fredonia Recreation Parlor team. He also enjoyed gambling, going to Prairie Band Casino weekly until last year when he could no longer drive. His visits to the casino continued although not as often as he would have liked.
On October 24, 1959, Dick married Dila Boyer. Three daughters were born to this marriage: Rhonda Jean, Sherryl Kim, and Andrea Lenee. The couple later divorced.
On May 5, 1972, he married Roberta McPurdy Bronson in Miami, Okla. As a result of this marriage, Dick raised her daughter Patricia (Trish). The couple later divorced.
Dick was also married to Alvina Green, helping raise her son Adam; they later divorced.
Dick is survived by his daughters Sherryl Woods of Houston, Texas, and Andrea (Gene) Lewis of Owasso, Okla.; stepdaughter Trish (Bronson) JuAire of Hamilton; stepson Adam Green and step-daughter Tina (Blevens) Wooten both of Fredonia. He has eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren, and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
His parents; sister Dorothy Ruane; daughter Rhonda Matt, and son-in-law Joe JuAire preceded him in death.
Wickham Family Funeral Home, Fredonia, is in charge of arrangements. The service will be Tuesday, Dec 8, at 2 p.m.at Wickham Family Funeral Home with burial at Fredonia Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Steve Relph Memorial at Fredonia High School.
