Phyllis H. Peterson, 88, a long time resident of the Buffalo, Kansas, area, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Chanute Nursing Center in Chanute, Kansas. She was born June 1, 1920 in Riley County, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Buss) Johnsmeyer. Phyllis was graduated from Emporia State Teacher"s College in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She received her Master of Science degree in 1971 from Emporia State University. She spent 35 years teaching school in the areas of elementary and business in the Williamsburg, Stilwell, Gridley, Lamont, Beattie and Altoona-Midway school districts. On December 24, 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri, she married Milo E. Peterson. He preceded her in death December 2, 1998. Phyllis was a member of the High Prairie United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the White Rose Chapter-Order of the Eastern Star and Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teacher Sorority. Her survivors include: Two sons: Larry Peterson of Buffalo, Kansas Bob Peterson of El Dorado, Kansas One daughter: Mary Ellen Peterson of Apple Valley, California A private family funeral has been planned with burial to take place in the High Prairie Cemetery. The family requests no flowers or memorials be sent. Words of condolence for the family may be left on this website.
