Norman L. Nelson

Norman L. Nelson, 85, of Independence, Kansas passed away Friday, February 23, 2018 at his home with family by his side.

Norman Lavern Nelson was born March 10, 1932 in Cherryvale, Kansas the son John Franklin Nelson and Oda Gladys Thomas White Nelson. He grew up in Cherryvale and attended Cherryvale schools.

He served with the United States Army attaining the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1954.

On December 27, 1980 in Nowata, Oklahoma he was united in marriage to Gwendolyn (Birran) Stone and she survives at the home.

Norman worked for Cessna in Wichita, Kansas as a spot welder/supervisor and retired after working 33 years.

He enjoyed going fishing, camping and being with church family.

Norman was member of the Cherryvale Bible Holiness Church and American Legion in Independence.

He is survived by his wife of the home, children, Norma Jean Ward of Wichita, Kansas, Gwendolyn K. Clark of Herrington, Kansas, Patsy Baker of Paola, Kansas, grandchildren, Aaron Malott, Natasha Malott, Allen Tweat, Allie Clark, Robert Whistler, great grandchildren, Katelyn Tweat, Lacy McElroy, Damion Tweat, Adriana Malott, Madyson Clark, Jackson Clark and Sophia Clark.

He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers, six sisters, daughter, Carolyn Sue Stone and grandson, Michael Whistler.

Celebration of Life Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the Bible Holiness Church in Cherryvale.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 East 4th, Cherryvale, Kansas.

Interment will follow the services in Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale.


Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Bible Holiness Church and may be left or mailed to the funeral home.
