Merlin "Lucky" Howard Ware

Merlin Howard "Lucky" Ware, 84, a 62-year resident of Altoona, Kansas, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Fredonia, Kansas. He was born June 5, 1927, near Coyville, Kansas, the son of Oliver and Viola (Busby) Ware. Merlin was a graduate of Coyville High School. He served in the United States Army July 21, 1945 to January 24, 1947, earning the rank of corporal. On January 27, 1948, Merlin was united in marriage to Patsy Marie Fischer. To this union, one daughter, Dianna, was born. Patsy preceded him in death December 4, 1994. Merlin was a self-employed painter, known for the many signs he painted for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Fredonia American Legion and very active with the Fredonia VFW, where he earned several national honors. For many years, he organized the military funeral honors for local veterans. Merlin is survived by: One son-in-law: Rodger Shinn of Fredonia, KS One grandson: Tracy Shane Shinn of Olathe, KS One sister: Margaret Shafer of Neodesha Several nieces and nephews His parents, Oliver and Viola Ware; wife, Patsy; and daughter Dianna Shinn preceded him in death. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at the Altoona Cemetery with military honors conducted by VFW Posts 3018 and 1022 and VFW Past District Officers. Memorials have been established in Merlin"s name with the Fredonia VFW Post 3018 and the Fredonia American Legion Post and contributions can be sent to the funeral home.
