Mary Christine Compton

Mary Christine (Troutman) Compton, 85, a resident of rural Fredonia, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2019.
Mary was born on July 5, 1933 in Independence Kansas, the daughter of Charles Wilbur Troutman and Florence (Witty) Troutman. She grew up in Fredonia, Kansas, graduating from Fredonia High School in 1951.
On July 6, 1952, she was united in marriage to Robert J. Compton and he survives at the home. To this union, four children were born, Sherrie, Teresa, Marcia and Craig.
Mary worked as a paraprofessional for USD 484 for 24 years. From 1995-2004, Mary served in the capacity as Kansas State Representative.
She was a member of the Lafontaine Christian Church and the First Christian Church of Fredonia and helped with many church and funeral dinners. Mary was an active member of Fredonia Business Women, Red Hat Society, Wilson County Republican Women, VFW Auxiliary, Tuesday Study Club. She served many years for Republican activities, Wilson County Republican Central Committee Chairman, and President of Kansas Republican Women from 1990-1991. She volunteered at Beverly Health Rehab, Christian Thrift Store, Food Bank, Election Board and Senior Citizen Center.
Mary was a civic and community minded person. She could always be found working for others. She sent numerous cards to people and thank you notes. Mary loved shopping, collecting elephants and Red Hats. She recently shared her collection of hats with the residents at Morning Star. Mary enjoyed working in her flower bed and being around people and others loved being around her.
Survivors include her husband of the home, daughters; Sherrie Steele of Fredonia, Kansas, Teresa Compton of Fredonia, Kansas, Marcia Cline of Fredonia, Kansas, son; Craig Compton of Fredonia, Kansas and sister; Shirley Walters of Columbia, Missouri, 5 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents.
Celebration of Life Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 18 at the First Christian Church. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, March 17, at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 510 N. 7th, Fredonia, Kansas.
