Lyle Clayton Garvey

December 6, 1924 — October 28, 2005

Lyle Clayton Garvey, 80, retired aircraft electronics technician, a resident of rural Coyville, Kansas and formerly of Derby, Kansas, died Friday, October 28, 2005, in the solace of close family members at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born in Wichita on December 6, 1924 to Clayton Rice and Thelma Juanita Lyle Garvey, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his son, Warren Russell; his sister Betty Cochran, and his brother Robert. Lyle attended Wichita East High School, then served in the US Air Force in World War II as a ground crew radio operator in China, Burma and India. He married Wanda Jean Thompson, daughter of Ernest Daniel and Ella Thompson, on June 28, 1947 in Wichita. After completing television school in Kansas City in 1950, they returned to Wichita where Lyle first worked at Mullets Radio Service, followed by 15 years at Boeing and 22 years at Learjet. They moved to Derby in 1954. He and Wanda graduated five children from Derby High School and were members of the Derby Church of the Nazarene. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in Coyville in 1997. They retired to a hilltop estate along the Verdigris River in Wilson County near Coyville in 1992 where Lyle pursued his passion of landscaping and gardening until his death. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Wanda; brother Jack, Bentley; daughter Barbara Flax, Wichita, sons Ernest, Westminster, CO; Richard, Wichita; and Raymond, Valley Center; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, November 3, 2005 at the Timmons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jon Shellenberger of the Derby Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in the Toronto Cemetery, Toronto, Kansas. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, 2:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. with the family receiving friends 5:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. The family requests memorial donations to the Coyville Community Center or the Derby Church of the Nazarene in care of Timmons Funeral Home, P.O. Box 168, Fredonia, Kansas, 66736.
