Leon J. Rau, 77, of Liberty, Kansas passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021 in Labette County, Kansas.
Leon John Rau was born January 14, 1944, in Wichita, Kansas the son of Edward and Alma (May) Rau. He grew up in Wichita, Kansas and graduated from Kapaun High School in 1962. He later attended Kansas Newman College and Wichita State University.
He served with the United States Army and trained in the Army Intelligence Program. He was proud to serve his country and to be an American.
On July 8, 1967, in Wichita he was united in marriage to Lois M. Patry, and she survives at the home.
Leon enjoyed farming, raising cattle, flying, fishing, and playing cards especially hand and foot with his family. He was hardworking and will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He was self employed working on his farm. He also was the owner of Rau Cattle LLC. He retired after a lifelong career in Avionics.
Leon was a member of the Kansas Farm Bureau, Kansas Cattlemen’s Association and was elected Montgomery County Commissioner from 2012 until 2016.
Survivors include his wife Lois of the home, children, Debbie (Paul) Steed of Cherryvale, Kansas, John Rau of Liberty, Kansas, Lori (Bryan) Christiansen of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lisa (Todd) Hayes of Coffeyville, Kansas, sisters, Judy (Gerald) Huelskamp of Mt. Hope, Kansas, Mary Ann (Tom) Winter of Andale, Kansas, brothers, Maurice (Janet) Rau of Elk City, Kansas, Eddie (Christina) Rau of Ft. Worth Texas, sister in law, Sindy Rau of Lenexa, Kansas, 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Steve Rau and grandson, Michael Rau.
Celebration of Leon’s Life will be held 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Liberty United Methodist Church in Liberty, Kansas.
