Dr. Lawrence J. Cox, 86, a resident of Fredonia, and formerly of Chandler, Oklahoma, died Sunday, February 5, 2006 at Beverly Health and Rehab in Fredonia. He was born November 28, 1919 in Chandler, the son of Herbert and Olga (Soderstrom) Cox. He was a 1939 graduate of Chandler High School. He earned the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army Infantry 1942-1946, during World War II, where he also received a purple heart. Following the service he received a bachelors degree from Oklahoma State University in 1948; a master"s degree from Kansas State University in 1960; and a Ph.D from North Carolina State in Raleigh in 1969. Dr. Cox was retired from Kansas State University as an Area Extension Director. On November 28, 1941 in Bristow, Oklahoma, he married Jessie Victoria Acord. She preceded him in death October 6, 2000. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Chandler and an associate member of the First Christian Church in Fredonia. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution; the Chandler American Legion; Lions Club International; Wilson County Historical Society; Senior Citizens of Fredonia; Kansas County Agents Association; Lincoln County Historical Society; and a lifetime member of the Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension Fraternity. His survivors include, Daughter and son-in-law, Karen & Mark Wing of Altoona, KS; Son and daughter-in-law, Larry & Cheryl Cox of Colby, KS; Sisters and brother-in-law, Louvella & George Ficke of Wadsworth, IL; Agatha Strickland of Zion, IL; Brother, Brenton Cox of Chandler, OK; Sister-in-law, Ruth Cox of Houston, TX; 8 Grandchildren; 5 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Loren Cox; one sister, Treva Cox; and one grandson, Ken Wing. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, February 9, 2006 at the First Christian Church in Fredonia with Rev. Steve Brodbeck officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 10, 2006 at the Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Oklahoma with Rev. Fred Rider of the First Christian Church in Chandler officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at Timmons Funeral Home. A memorial has been established in his name with the Kansas 4-H Foundation and may be sent to the funeral home.
