Lawrence George Cox, 89, a longtime resident of Fredonia, Kansas, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Neodesha, Kansas. He was born January 17, 1923 in Fredonia, the son of George H. and Ila D. (Forbes) Cox. Lawrence was a 1943 graduate of Wellington High School. Following graduation, Lawrence served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant, March 29, 1943 to January 31, 1946. During this time, he received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Lawrence also served in the United States Air Force, March 27, 1951 to March 26, 1954, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. On July 30, 1943 in Champaign, Illinois, Lawrence was united in marriage to Colleene Gasper. She preceded him in death March 16, 2009. Lawrence and bother Donald owned and operated Cox 66 Service and Caf" in Fredonia. He retired after 43 years in business. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Fredonia and the American Legion in Chanute, Kansas. He was also very active with the Fredonia Golf Club, instrumental in converting sand greens to artificial greens and later to grass greens. Lawrence"s survivors include: One son Lawrence (Butch) and Sandy Cox of Fredonia, KS One brother Donald Cox of Chanute, KS Three grandchildren Jon Cox, Cassie LeMasurier, and Jeff Cox Three great grandchildren: Austin Farmer, Tori Cox and Thatcher Cox His parents, George and Ila Cox; one sister, Dorothy Duncan; and one son, Gary Joe Cox preceded him in death. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Fredonia City Cemetery with Carl Thornton officiating. The Kansas National Guard Honor Guard will conduct military Rites. A memorial has been established in Lawrence"s name with the First Christian Church and contributions can be sent to the funeral home. Words of condolence for the family may be left on this website.
