John R. Thompson, 81, a longtime resident of Altoona, Kansas, formerly of Iowa and California, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at his residence in Altoona. He was born June 24, 1925 in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of John R., Sr. and Mildred (Mundt) Thompson. He was a member of the United States Navy during World War II, serving from 1943 to 1946. Following his period of service, he graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, then received his M.A. degree from Colorado State University. He taught at various high schools and community colleges in Iowa and California, retiring in 1971. On July 11, 1947, in Muscatine, he married Marilyn Miller. She survives at their Altoona home, where they have resided since 1974. They have enjoyed the outdoor activities available in this area. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife and one sister-in-law, Jean Dolphin of Omaha, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Harry A. Dolphin and David C. Miller. Cremation has taken place and there are no services planned. A memorial has been established in his name with the Altoona City Library and may be sent to the funeral home.
