Jimmy William Smith, 73, a lifelong resident of Fredonia, Kansas, died Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Golden Living Center in Fredonia following a short illness. He was born January 25, 1940 in Fredonia, the son of Paul R. and Irene Elizabeth May (Dannels) Smith. Jim was a 1958 graduate of Fredonia High School. He served in the United States Navy, 1958-1962, spending 36 months on the John W. Weeks Destroyer, working in the telecommunications field. In 2002, Jim retired from Ladow and Spohn Printing Company, where he worked 36 years as a printer-cutter. Prior to working for Ladow and Spohn, Jim had been employed at Leonard"s Filling Station and Murphy Electric. On April 19, 1963 at the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia, Jim was united in marriage to JoLene Reinhart. To this union, one son, Karl, was born. Jim and JoLene recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. JoLene survives at their home. Jim was a master in the field of woodworking, creating beautiful pieces of furniture for family and friends. For the past several summers, he volunteered his time mowing the grounds for the Old Iron Club. In addition to his wife, JoLene, Jim is survived by one sister, Patty Blanck of Valley Falls, KS. He was preceded in death by their son, Karl Smith; his parents, Paul and Irene Smith; and one brother, Melvin Smith. Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Fredonia City Cemetery with Mike Myers officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, 5:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. at Timmons Funeral Home. Memorials have been established in Jim"s name with Old Iron Club and the Fredonia Flag Fund, and contributions can be sent to or left at the funeral home.
