Janice Claire Akers

June 28, 1930 — May 14, 2022

Janice C. Akers, lifelong resident of Chanute, KS, passed away peacefully at her home on May 14, 2022.

She was born June 28, 1930, to P.L. and Mildred Forslund in Chanute, KS.

Janice worked at the Main Street Theater and the NeoCha Drive Inn during High School. She graduated from CHS in May of 1948.

On June 6, 1948, she married the love of her life John P. Akers. She was a stay-at-home mom until after her husband’s death in 1974.

Janice worked for many years at Neosho Memorial Hospital in Housekeeping until her retirement. She then became manager of the snack shop, serving up homemade pie, malts, and coffee. That ended when the snack shop closed for hospital construction.

Janice loved working in the yard. She was often seen on her big riding mower, racing around her yard with her sun shading hat on, raking leaves away from the house, and sweeping the patio and sidewalk when she was done.

Janice had a project to do every day. She gave you a chore when you came to visit, such as putting water in the bird bath and throwing breadcrumbs out for the squirrels when she was no longer able to work outside.

Janice is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; John P. Akers, son; Freddy Joe Akers, her brothers; John Van Forslund, Fred Z. Forslund and wife Twyla.

She is survived by; daughter, Gail Busby, son in law; Brent Busby of Humboldt, KS., a Grand dog, Gracie, a sister; Terry Walker, Pittsburg, KS., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials have been suggested to Harry Hynes Hospice who took excellent care of her and helped family during her journeys end here on earth. Memorials can be left with or mailed to the funeral home.

Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date.

Services are under the guidance of Wickham Family Funeral Home 500 N. Forest Ave. Chanute, KS 66720.
