George "Dave" David Dye

May 30, 1955 — March 26, 2020

George David “Dave” Dye, 64, of Pittsburg, Kansas, passed away on March 26, 2020 in his daughter’s home after a valiant battle with kidney cancer.

Dave was born on May 30, 1955 to Virgil and Caroline Dye in Independence, Kansas. He lived in Independence with his parents and sisters and attended Independence Schools and graduated in 1973. He was a Boy Scout, Little League player, and could be found at the hobby shop racing HO scale cars and adding to his collection of slot cars or teaching others about them. He attended vo-tech classes in Coffeyville, KS and Pittsburg State University where he studied auto tech.

Most recently, Dave worked as a mechanic for the City of Columbus. A mechanic his whole life, he worked on everything from circus trucks to race cars and heavy equipment. In his spare time, Dave enjoyed all manner of auto racing, but especially drag racing and little toy slot cars. He served on the board and as a founding member of the Bone Creek Sport and Gun Club. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Sons of the American Legion, leading the Honor Guard at his local post.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Dye; son, David Dye; daughter in law, Liz Harris; sister, Ginny Dye; and granddaughters, Irene and Abby; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Caroline Dye, and sisters, Peggy Riedle and Kristine Yates.

Memorial service will be held June 6, 2020 at 10:00 am at Wickham Family Funeral Home in Cherryvale, Kansas with Jim Harris officiating. He was a fantastic brother, a most wonderful and present father and grandfather, and a terrible singer.
