Evelyn May (Cool) Decou

Evelyn May (Cool) DeCou, 102, passed away at her home, Tuesday, July 7, 2020.
Evelyn DeCou was born January 10, 1918 to AR James SR. and Bessie (Shipp) James in Augusta, Kansas. She graduated from North High School in Wichita, Kansas in 1936. In the late 1980’s, in her 70’s, Evelyn took classes from Neosho County.
Evelyn was united in marriage to Harry B. Cool on August 10, 1941 in Neodesha, Kansas, he preceded her in death in 1985. Evelyn married Harold DeCou on April 14, 1990 in Fredonia, Kansas, he preceded her in death on November 7, 2007.
Evelyn worked at JC Penny as a clerk for many years until its closing in 1979. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, playing cards, canning and collecting red birds. She will be remembered for her gardening, flowers and yardwork. She would even be seen weed eating her yard when she was 100 years old.
Evelyn was a member of First Christian Church, Needle Craft Club, Christian Women’s Fellowship, Busy Bee Club, Christian Thrift Store and worked and served a lot of meals at the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Compton and husband Ben; grandchildren, Lisa Pruter and husband Daryl, Brian Compton and wife Amy; step grandsons Carson Reid, Duncan Reid, Spencer Reid, Daris Pruter, Dallas Pruter and Daxton Pruter; two special people in her life that she loved dearly, her caretakers, Joan Oliver and Sherrie Steele.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughter, Janet Sue Dickerson, sisters, Annabell James, Juanita White, brother, AR James Jr. and special Aunt, Emma James.
Friends may sign the register book from 1:00 P.M until 5:00 P.M, Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 510 North 7th, Fredonia, Kansas 66736.
Celebration of Life Services will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, July 10, 2020 at First Christian Church, 303 North 7th Fredonia, Kansas. There will be graveside service for immediate family, following the service, at Fredonia Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Christian Thrift Store and be mailed to or left at Wickham Family Funeral Home.
