Eugene "Gene" Garrison

Eugene "Gene" Garrison, 91, longtime business owner of Independence, Kansas passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Medicalodges in Independence.
Eugene was born May 7, 1930, in Independence, Kansas the son of Francis and Veva (Potter) Garrison. He grew up in Independence and graduated from Independence High School. After graduating he enlisted with the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean War from October 1950 until his honorable discharge in October of 1954.

On September 25, 1954, in Independence he was united in marriage to Mary Lee Adams, and she preceded him in death January 19, 2018.

Gene worked part time at Darby’s IGA and Reed’S IGA growing up. He was also employed at Sinclair Pipeline Company.

He later owned Garrison’s APCO Service Station and later along with his business partner, Frank Hey, they formed the Garrison and Hey Service Station on Penn Avenue in Independence. They were in business close to 50 years. It was one of the last full-service stations in the area.

Gene was a Perpetual Life Member of the Masonic Carson Lodge #132 in Elk City and Life Member of Scottish Rite - 32nd degree Mason. He was a Life Member of the Mirza Shrine in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Gene was a Life Member of the VFW and American Legion in Independence. He also was a member of the Parson Elks Lodge and Life Member of the Navy Lithographer’s Association.

He was a regular blood donor for many years

Survivors include his son Mark Garrison of Puyallup, Washington, granddaughters, Haley Hinthorn of Independence, Kansas, and Addyson Garrison of Puyallup, Washington, brother, Gail Garrison of Pittsburg, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary, brothers, Francis Marion Garrison and Robert Garrison and daughter, Deborah Sandoval.

Cremation has taken place with a Celebration of Gene's life will be held 5:00 P.M. until 7:00P.M., Friday, January 7, 2022, at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 216 East 4th, Cherryvale, Kansas 67335.

Private family inurnment will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas.

Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Independence VFW or Shriners Children's Hospital and they may be left or mailed to the funeral home
