Dwayne E. Hull

Dwayne E. Hull, 70, a resident of rural Fredonia, Kansas, died Monday, February 20, 2006, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born August 30, 1935 in Coyville, Kansas, the son of Everett W. and Alta LaVerne (Bird) Hull. He was a 1953 graduate of Fredonia High School and graduated from the University of Kansas School of Engineering in 1958, as well as from the ROTC Program as a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermasters Corps. He served 1958 to 1968 in the United States Army Reserves where he earned the rank of Captain. He was employed by the United States Geological Survey as a petroleum geologist for 27 years, retiring in 1985. During his 27 year tenure, he wrote the first Environmental Impact Statement adopted by the Federal Government. He was also in charge of mapping the Atlantic coastline for offshore drilling sites and for setting up the geothermal steam fields in California for alternate energy sources. From 1985 until 1994 he was the purchasing agent for Fredonia Regional Hospital and he and his wife, Karen, owned and operated Penny Run Christmas Tree Farm. On May 3, 1959 at the First Christian Church in Fredonia, he married Karen Kingsbury. She survives at their home. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia. He was also a founding member and past president of Gold Dust Inc.; past president of the Fredonia Lions Club and the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce; a graduate of the Wilson County Leadership Class; and earned honors as an Eagle Scout. He was also issued a patent for a portable dry kiln design. He enjoyed woodworking, boating, fishing and vacationing with his grandchildren. Survivors in addition to his wife Karen include: Two daughters, Sherry Segraves of Chanute, KS; Kim Sandbothe of Lawrence, KS; Two sons, Steve Hull of Chanute, KS; David & Donna Hull of Fredonia, KS; One sister, Selma McIntire of Fredonia, KS; Sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Jane Nicole Hull. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, February 24, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Charlotte Coates officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery near Roper. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, 5:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. A memorial has been established in his name with the First United Methodist Church and can be sent to the funeral home.
