Dorothy M. Thornton

Dorothy M. Thornton, 88, of Fredonia, Kansas passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at her home.

Dorothy Marilyn Thornton was born January 31, 1929 in Fredonia, Kansas the daughter of William J. Slater and Martha Ann (DeWitt) Slater. She grew up in Fredonia and attended Fredonia Schools. She received her GED and later went back to Independence Cosmetology School.

On August 3, 1946 in Independence, Kansas she was united in marriage to Carl E. Thornton and he survives at the home.

Dorothy worked in her earlier years at Western Publishing in Coffeyville, Window Factory and Cox’s 5 & 10 in Fredonia. Her most recent job was as a cosmetologist in Fredonia.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, golfing, drawing pictures and square dancing. She loved traveling and lived in South Texas during the winter months for 18 years.

Dorothy was a member of the First Christian Church of Fredonia, Charter Member of the Red Hat Society and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Survivors include husband, Carl of the home, children, Connie Lyn Menefee and her husband Earl of Dearing, Kansas, Patty Ann Hogan and her husband Clifford of Independence, Kansas, Gary Dean Thornton and his wife Missy of Cherryvale, Kansas, brother John E. Slater of Kent, Washington, 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Carl Dean Thornton, three brothers and three sisters.

Cremation has taken place with Celebration of Life Services being held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 9, 2017 at First Christian Church in Fredonia. The family will greet friends at the church from 10:00 until service time.

Memorial remembrances are suggested to First Christian Church or the Christian Thrift
