David P. Wofford, 102, a resident of Fredonia, Kansas since 1930, died Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Cherryvale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born February 14, 1906 near Cassville, Georgia, the fourth child born to Eli and Joanna (Lowe) Wofford. Following high school, he attended Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock. During the Great Depression, Mr. Wofford and his brothers moved to Fredonia to find work at the local cement plant. He made Fredonia his home and in 1940, he married Maxine "Nell" Morrison. Maxine, whom David loving referred to as "Kid", survives at the Cherryvale Nursing Center. Though David and Maxine had no children of their own, they made the community of Fredonia their family. He was a member of the CME Church. David retired from General Portland after 41 years of employment. Until his death, he was the oldest living retiree from the cement plant. Survivors, in addition to his wife, Maxine, include several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Harry, DeWitt and Olie. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the Fredonia City Cemetery with Mike Myers officiating. Visitation will be Monday, 2:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. and Tuesday, 9:00 A.M.-10:00 A.M. at Timmons Funeral Home. A memorial has been established in his name with the American Cancer Society and may be sent to the funeral home. Family condolences may be sent to this website.
