Betty Jane (Rogers) VanDyne transitioned to the next life on Saturday, February 3, 2024, after 97 years of love and service to her family and her community.
Betty Jane was born on May 20, 1926, to Wilbur and Eva Rogers at home. She is survived by her sister, Alice Taylor of Independence, Kansas; four children, Sharon (Glen) Dikes of Oklahoma City, Jayne (Lee) Mattix of Independence, Kent (Sarah) VanDyne of Basehor, Kansas, and Andy (Kris) VanDyne of Everton, AR; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Wayne VanDyne; grandson, Curt Dikes; her parents, Wilbur and Eva Rogers; sister, Lucille Rogers; brother, Merle Lee Rogers; and a host of family members and friends.
Betty Jane graduated from Independence High School with the Class of 1944, married H. Wayne VanDyne on June 9, 1946, after the church service in the First Nazarene Church, 11th and Walnut, where they were active members until they were unable to physically attend. They were avid supporters of all ministries of the church, often being the center of social activities at their home, especially during the summer.
Betty Jane was the ultimate hostess, making all who entered her home feel welcome and comfortable. Her kitchen was her queendom. Many pies, cookies, cakes, and delicious meals were offered to family and guests around her kitchen table. She also enjoyed sewing and specifically making quilts. Her skills were impeccable. Each of the grandchildren was blessed with a quilt she had lovingly put together, some of them quilted by hand.
Betty Jane lived out love—for family, neighbor, the marginalized, the other. She leaves a great legacy for all of us to follow.
