Almeta Faye Turner

Almeta Faye Turner, 91, a resident of Fredonia, Kansas, died Saturday, December 23, 2006 at Fredonia Regional Hospital. She was born September 21, 1915 in Bluff City, Kansas, the daughter of Charles A. and Cora E. (Pulliam) Heller. She was a graduate of Bluff City High School and attended what is now Emporia State University, obtaining her teaching certificate in 1934 and graduating in 1965. On September 4, 1938 in Bluff City, she married Harry L. Turner. They lived in Harper, Kansas until they moved to a farm east of Fredonia in 1949. Mr. Turner preceded her in death December 10, 1978. She taught school for four years in Harper County. In Fredonia, she taught fourth grade at Lincoln Elementary School from 1960 through 1978, and worked at the Fredonia Public Library from 1979 through 1991. She received the USD 484 Teacher of the Year Award in 1978. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia, the United Methodist Women and a licensed lay leader in the United Methodist Church. She was involved in many church activities, including helping to organize the Twin Valley Parish. She was also a member of the 1910 Club, the Retired Teachers Association, and was a 4-H Leader for many years. Her survivors include: One son: John J. Turner of Eureka Springs, Arkansas Two daughters: Diane Wright of Kansas City, Kansas Leann Dixon of Baldwin City, Kansas Six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at the Harper Cemetery in Harper, Kansas. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia. Friends may call at Timmons Funeral Home on Tuesday, 1:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. Memorials have been established in her name with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the American Diabetes Association and may be sent to the funeral home.
