Alma Sue Gillis

August 25, 1940 — February 3, 2025

Chanute, Kansas

Alma Sue Gillis, 84, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, at her home. Born to Ralph and Myrtle (Miller) Fitzsimmons, on August 25, 1940, in Coffeyville, Kansas, Sue dedicated her life to her family, her passions, and her work.

Sue was united in marriage to Richard Gillis on January 22, 1987, in Chanute, Kansas. Although they met later in life their love for each other was something everyone should aspire to have. They spent 38 years loving each other with everything they had.

She was an incredible seamstress, known for her creative abilities, which she honed during her 30-year career at Tioga Territory. Sue’s life was not just defined by her work; it was enriched by a wide array of interests and activities that brought her joy.

She had a passion for sewing, tackling puzzles, and spoiling her dogs. A favorite activity was also watching her grandsons Matt and Pat race. Her fondness for computer games was balanced by her love for travel and attending horse shows, experiences that she cherished throughout her life.

Sue was a high school graduate of Field Kindley High School. She also held membership in the American Legion of Coffeyville, Kansas, which reflected her commitment to community and service. After graduating high school Sue traveled to the West Coast and started her family.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Richard, and her children: Jean Harris of Chanute, Kansas; Kathy Felter of Scammon, Kansas; Joeottis Arell Jr. of Humboldt, Kansas; Cheryl Pickel of Chesapeake, Virginia; Becky Jackson of Fort Scott, Kansas; and Todd Gillis of Prescott, Kansas. Sue was a devoted grandmother and a great-grandmother, with a legacy that includes 24 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry her memory forward.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings—Jean, Jo, Ann, Beulah “Bootsie”, John, Jackie, and Carol—and a son, Darrell Gillis.

The impact she has made on her family and friends will be felt for generations to come, as they remember her kindness, strength, and the many happy moments they shared. She was a remarkable woman whose spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her. Cremation has been requested with no services planned at this time.

Serviced are under the guidance of Wickham Family Funeral Home 500 North Forest Ave. Chanute, Kansas.
