Betty Jean Wood

Betty Jean Wood, 80, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, in Chanute. She was born on June 28, 1943, in Chanute, Kansas, to the late Lewis and Cecil (Brown) Stowell. Betty was a loving and caring individual, known for her fun-loving nature and dedication to volunteer work. She had a particular fondness for dolphins and cherished her extensive collection of dolphin memorabilia. Betty was actively involved in her community as a Cub Scout Troop Leader, School Crossing Guard, and volunteer at the Special Olympics.

On September 3, 1960, Betty married the love of her life, Christopher Wood, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and cherished memories.

Betty will be deeply missed by her husband, Christopher Wood, of the home. She is also survived by her daughters, Christina Reed of Chanute, KS, and Tracy Leal ‘Herrera of Kansas City, Kansas. Her two sons, Christopher Wood Jr. of Lenexa, KS, and Frederick Wood of Chanute, KS. Additionally, she is survived by her brothers, Perry (Bear) North Jr., of Chanute, KS, and Jim Stowell of Pittsburg, KS. Betty leaves behind a lasting legacy through her 12 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, one brother, and one son, Edward.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wickham Family Funeral Home, located at 500 North Forest Ave., Chanute, Kansas. The Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chanute, Kansas, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. Betty will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute.

Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick's Catholic School. Donations can be left with or mailed to the funeral home.

Betty Jean Wood will be remembered for her vibrant personality, love for her family, and dedication to her community. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
